Universidad San Sebastián has been ranked among the top ten Chilean institutions listed in the prestigious Nature Research Leaders 2024 (Nature Index), an international index that measures the publication of scientific articles in high-quality journals over the previous year.

With 22 publications, USS holds the 9th position, standing out mainly for its strong presence in the fields of chemistry and physics.
The research topics covered in these publications range from the synthesis and characterization of new chemical complexes to advanced theories in particle physics and supergravity. There are also significant contributions in biology, neuroscience, and medical sciences, including studies on cancer-related muscle atrophy, protein transport, and brain metabolism.
USS has made a remarkable leap in the ranking, climbing from 21st place in the 2023 edition to 9th place in 2024 — marking the first time it has entered the top 10 among Chilean universities.
Moreover, USS is now listed across all disciplines included in the index: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, and Physical Sciences. Its highest position was achieved in the field of Chemistry, where the university appears for the first time and ranks fourth.
USS’s growth has been impressive, with a 133% increase compared to the 2022 ranking. Additionally, the university rose by more than 1,000 places globally, moving from 2,583rd in 2023 (based on 2022 data) to 1,451st in the 2024 edition (based on 2023 data).
The Nature Index is an open database that tracks contributions to research articles published in journals selected for their reputation by an independent group of researchers.
Dr. Carlos Vio, Vice Rector of Research and Doctoral Programs at USS, commented, “This achievement is the result of an institutional project to strengthen research capacity and advanced training. We are proud to be part of this select group of leading research institutions in the country”.
