USS Brings Latin America’s Most Advanced 4D Microscope to Valdivia

The new technology will support research on cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, inflammatory disorders, and type 2 diabetes, while expanding access to cutting-edge scientific infrastructure across Chile.

Universidad San Sebastián (USS), in partnership with the Center for Scientific Studies (Centro de Estudios Científicos), has taken a major step forward in scientific research with the installation of Latin America’s first 4D confocal microscope, the most advanced imaging system of its kind in the region.

Located in Valdivia, the new equipment positions Chile at the forefront of advanced microscopy and will strengthen collaborative research in fields such as neuroscience, immunology, physiology, microbiology, and biomedicine. The technology enables scientists to observe cellular behavior in real time and within its natural environment, opening new possibilities for understanding disease mechanisms and developing innovative therapies.

The microscope will contribute to generating evidence for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, inflammatory disorders, and type 2 diabetes. Researchers will be able to monitor tissue responses to pharmaceuticals, study how tumors invade surrounding tissues, and examine how brain cells respond to different stimuli.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Chilean Science

The equipment is part of the Southern BioImaging Platform (SBIP), an initiative led by USS, CECs, and Universidad de La Frontera. The project represents an investment of more than US$1.4 million funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) and USS.

Developed by Zeiss, the LMS 990 Confocal Microscope with Lightfield 4D technology captures high-speed images across four dimensions—X, Y, Z, and time—allowing researchers to visualize biological processes with unprecedented detail and precision. These capabilities provide new opportunities to study cellular dynamics through the integration of molecular, physiological, and functional observations.

Advancing Scientific Research Beyond Santiago

“We need to invest more in microscopy in our country, and this equipment aims to address that national demand,” said Dr. Felipe Barros, Director of CECs-USS. “This technology is not only for USS researchers, but for the entire Chilean scientific community.”

Barros emphasized that the platform strengthens scientific capabilities in southern Chile while promoting more equitable access to advanced research infrastructure nationwide.

The initiative is particularly significant given that nearly 65% of Chile’s scientific production is concentrated in the Metropolitan Region. By locating this technology in Valdivia, USS and its partners are helping to decentralize access to cutting-edge scientific resources and create new opportunities for regional research development.

Building an Advanced Microscopy Network

The new microscope will operate alongside the specialized imaging facilities of the Center for Cellular Biology and Biomedicine (CEBICEM) in Santiago and the advanced flow cytometry infrastructure at the USS Patagonia Campus, forming an integrated Advanced Microscopy Network.

According to Dr. Jorge Cancino, microscopy specialist at CEBICEM, USS complements state-of-the-art technology with expert scientific support. “We not only provide researchers with access to advanced equipment, but also support them throughout the entire research process, from experimental design to data acquisition and optimization,” he explained.

The network also includes the Full Spectrum Cytek Aurora CS flow cytometer at the USS Patagonia Campus, one of the most advanced instruments of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The system can identify more than 40 cellular markers simultaneously, providing powerful capabilities for research in immunology, infectious diseases, cellular biology, and biotechnology.

Together, these platforms allow scientists to analyze tissues, cells, and biological processes from multiple perspectives, combining real-time visualization, large-scale image analysis, and detailed characterization of cell populations.

With this new infrastructure, Universidad San Sebastián reinforces its commitment to research excellence, expands access to frontier technologies, and positions Valdivia and southern Chile as emerging hubs for advanced scientific research with international reach.
