Jos\u00e9 Manuel Cerda, PhD in Medieval History and\u00a0Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Humanities at Universidad San Sebasti\u00e1n (USS), has published the first English-language biography of\u00a0Leonor of England. Released in the United Kingdom by Routledge, the book examines the life and legacy of one of medieval Europe’s most influential queens.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Leonor\u00a0of England.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0The Plantagenet Queen of Castile<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is the latest book by\u00a0Dr. Jos\u00e9 Manuel Cerda<\/strong>,\u00a0medievalist and researcher\u00a0at the Faculty of Psychology and Humanities at Universidad San Sebasti\u00e1n (USS). Published by\u00a0\u00a0Routledge<\/a>\u00a0as part of its\u00a0Lives of Royal Women<\/em><\/a>\u00a0series, the volume is the first book in English devoted exclusively to\u00a0Queen Leonor of England.<\/p>\n

Dr. Cerda, founder of the\u00a0Humanities Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0at USS\u00a0brings together more than a decade of research on the English princess and Queen of Castile, whose political, cultural, and dynastic influence helped shape medieval Europe.<\/p>\n

Research with International\u00a0impact<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Dr. Cerda began his postdoctoral research on\u00a0Leonor\u00a0of England in 2009. Since then, he has published\u00a0numerous\u00a0journal articles, book chapters, and a Spanish-language biography released by Trea in Spain\u00a0in 2021.<\/p>\n

“Leonor\u00a0stood out not only for her influential role as Queen of Castile, but also because she was the daughter of the King of England and a member of the powerful Plantagenet dynasty, the leading royal house in twelfth-century Europe,” said Dr. Cerda.<\/p>\n

Born in 1161,\u00a0Leonor\u00a0was the daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Henry II of England, and the sister of Richard the Lionheart. She married Alfonso VIII of Castile and became one of the most influential queens of medieval Spain. Although many books have been written about her famous family, this is the first biography in English dedicated exclusively to her life.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0influential\u00a0queen in Medieval Europe<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Raised in Normandy and Aquitaine,\u00a0Leonor promoted the arts, literature, learning, and religious institutions throughout her reign. At a time when political power was overwhelmingly exercised by men, she also played a significant role in the government of the Kingdom of Castile.<\/p>\n

Together with Alfonso VIII, she contributed to the consolidation of the Castilian kingdom and helped transform Burgos into a major dynastic, religious, and cultural center. She also promoted the foundation of the Abbey of Santa Mar\u00eda la Real de Las\u00a0Huelgas\u00a0and the Hospital del Rey, two of the most important institutions of medieval Castile.<\/p>\n

Her court brought together troubadours, scholars, and artists from across Europe, reflecting the cultural exchanges that characterized the period and highlighting the\u00a0central role\u00a0played by royal women during the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n

Leonor\u00a0was also the mother and grandmother of European monarchs, including Ferdinand III of Castile and Le\u00f3n and Louis IX of France. According to Dr. Cerda, her dynastic influence has led some\u00a0historians to compare her with Queen Victoria, whose descendants occupied many of Europe’s royal thrones centuries later.<\/p>\n

“At a crucial moment in the history of Castile and medieval Europe,\u00a0Leonor\u00a0played a decisive role as wife, queen, and mother in consolidating a young kingdom that would become one of the most influential realms in medieval Spain,” Dr. Cerda said.<\/p>\n

USS\u00a0academic\u00a0joins\u00a0prestigious\u00a0international\u00a0book\u00a0series<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biography is part of Routledge’s\u00a0Lives of Royal Women<\/strong>\u00a0series, which brings together leading scholarship on the lives and contributions of royal women throughout history.<\/p>\n

Editedby\u00a0Elena Woodacre<\/strong>\u00a0(University of Winchester<\/a>) and\u00a0Louise Wilkinson<\/strong>\u00a0(University of Lincoln<\/a>), the series includes contributions from internationally recognized historians.
