The list, based on data from the Scopus database, includes 264 researchers affiliated with Chilean institutions and places four USS researchers among the national leaders in their respective disciplines.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Fourteen researchers from Universidad San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/a> (USS) have been included in the 2025 edition of the World\u2019s Top 2% Scientists<\/em> ranking<\/strong>, an international classification based on Scopus data, one of the world’s leading scientific databases. The ranking identifies researchers who belong to the top 2% worldwide in their respective fields, according to a composite indicator that measures scientific productivity and citation impact.<\/p>\n

The indicator considers variables such as total scientific publications throughout a researcher\u2019s career, recent and cumulative citations, the h-index, and the number of publications in which the researcher appears as the sole, first, or lead author.<\/strong> By standardizing these metrics across disciplines, the ranking enables researchers to be assessed within the context of their respective academic communities.<\/p>\n

In the 2025 edition, Dr. Jos\u00e9 Rodr\u00edguez,<\/strong> Director of the Center for Energy Transition (CTE) and researcher at the Faculty of Engineering on the Santiago campus, was recognized as the highest-ranked Chilean researcher across all fields. He leads the national ranking in Electric and Electronic Engineering and ranks 13th worldwide in the discipline. Dr. Mokhtar Aly,<\/strong> also a researcher at the Faculty of Engineering on the Santiago campus, appears in the same field.<\/p>\n

Other notable researchers include Dr. \u00c1lvaro Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong>, from the Faculty of Engineering at the Santiago campus, who leads the Chilean ranking in Physical Chemistry in terms of publication output, and Dr. Patricia P\u00e9rez,<\/strong> from the Faculty of Science, who is also recognized in the same field. Both contribute significantly to research in physical and computational chemistry at USS.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bernab\u00e9 Rivas<\/strong>, Assistant Vice-Rector for Doctoral Programs and Research and researcher at the Concepci\u00f3n campus, ranks first nationally in the field of Polymers. Dr. Varaprasad Kokkarachedu,<\/strong> from the Faculty of Engineering at the same campus, is also among the most highly cited researchers in this area. The presence of both academics highlights USS\u2019s contribution to a field with important applications in engineering, advanced materials, and sustainability.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jorge Zanelli,<\/strong> Director of the PhD Program in Theoretical Physics at the Faculty of Engineering on the Valdivia campus, stands out in the field of Particle and Nuclear Physics. He is joined by Dr. Cristi\u00e1n Mart\u00ednez<\/strong> and Dr. Alfredo P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, who are also members of the program\u2019s academic faculty. Their inclusion in the Top 2% ranking reflects the consolidation of a highly specialized research group in high-energy physics in southern Chile, developed in collaboration with the Center for Scientific Studies (CECs).<\/p>\n

Health Sciences and Human Development<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In Clinical Neurosciences, Dr. Felipe Barros,<\/strong> from the Faculty of Medicine at the Valdivia campus and Executive Director of the Center for Scientific Studies (CECs), appears in the Neurology and Neurosurgery category. Dr. Eugenia Morselli,<\/strong> from the Faculty of Medicine on the Santiago campus, is recognized for her contributions to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Together, their work strengthens biomedical research at USS, spanning topics from brain metabolism to the molecular mechanisms underlying disease.<\/p>\n

Dr. Rodrigo Pacheco,<\/strong> from the Faculty of Science and researcher at Centro Ciencia & Vida, is included in the ranking in the field of Immunology. His presence reflects both his scientific leadership and USS\u2019s strong integration with leading research centers in the life sciences.<\/p>\n

Finally, in the field of Developmental Psychology and Childhood Studies, two internationally recognized scholars affiliated with the USS PhD Program in Psychology and Mental Health stand out: Dr. Marinus van IJzendoorn<\/strong> and Dr. Marian Bakermans-Kranenburg.<\/strong> Renowned for their research on attachment, parenting, and child development, they rank 9th and 16th worldwide, respectively. Their participation in the USS academic community has strengthened the university\u2019s internationalization efforts and research excellence in developmental psychology and child and adolescent mental health.<\/p>\n
